New Years resolutions...

I think that “resolutions” are over rated, and doomed to fail. I prefer to challenge myself instead. This year I had made a few challenges: lessen my trash output, and start a garden.

How exactly do you lesson trash out put…?

Here are some how-to's:

Reduce House Hold Waste

Reducing Your Garbage

Here are a few ideas I gave a try:

1. Water bottle

I bought a Nalgene bottle to carry beverages. I chose a wide mouth one to accommodate ice cubes, or lemon wedges.

  Except in purple…my favorite color.

2. No disposable plates or cutlery.

At work most people use a new paper plate and plastic cutlery for every break. I decided to bring my own silverware, and eat from reusable containers.

3. Compost!

I keep a small ice-cream pail in my kitchen. All food scraps go in the bucket till I dump them in the bin outside.*

Bonus… I will have fertilzer for the garden. Yay!

As for the garden…we all know how that turned out…

: )

As for next year’s challenges;

1. Garden re-do.
I want to draw up plans for my garden next year. I want to make better use of the space. (Be more efficient.) Maybe even start a garden journal to keep my planting and harvesting notes in.
2. End the battle with the clutter
Reorganize my “closet“. *Sigh* I have been battling my dressing room for years. I need to make it more efficient!

3. End house-wide clutter epidemic:

Rearranging the furniture in the house. I know that this doesn’t sound like a big deal, but to me it is. I have to move rugs, cabinets, couches, and all of the art on the walls. Huge-huge mess during the process!

*A huge thank you goes to Spaceman Steve's family for giving me the idea. : )

Three Centuries

This December I turned 30.

Arg.
I have very mixed feeling about this.

I have had a lot of people say things like:

“Oh comeon…don’t make such a big deal outta it!”

“Well, if you think 30 is bad wait till your 40!”

“Its just a number.”

"Whaaat?"

While I think most are well intentioned, it is still hurtful and frustrating. I don’t like the fact that they dismiss my feelings, then tell me that I shouldn’t feel that way.

I have grown up and overcome a lot in the last ten years. Yet I still feel like I have so much to do.

I had been feeling a bit down...and I thought I would try to let it go and leave it to the universe.

We, today I got my answer: "This Is The Thing When You Hit 28 or 30."

I honestly don't think the answer could have been more clear. I don't have to be perfect...I just have to keep trying.

My Patented “Creepy over-smile”

Chocolate Redonkulousness!

Redonkulous:

re.donk’u.lous adj.

(as defined by Urban Dictionary)

1. Significantly more absurd than ridiculous to an almost impossible extreme; without the possibility of serious consideration.

I put so much stuff in that cake, it was redonkulous!

So if you are as crazy as I am here it’s the recipe;
Ingredients:♦1 dark chocolate cake mix. (I recommend Pillsbury Moist Supreme dark chocolate. It has 1 cup of pudding in the mix and has never let me down!)
♦3 eggs
♦1 1/4th cups milk 2% or whole, cream if you are extra decadent!
♦1/3rd cup oil
♦/4th cup mini chocolate chips
♦1/4th cup semi-sweet chips
♦1/4th cup white chocolate chips
♦1/4th cup toffee bits
♦1/4th cup caramel balls***
♦½ cup chopped pecans

Some tips:
♦The crumbly constancy of this cake is not suited to a layer cake like I made…I had a very difficult time with it. I recommend baking it in a 9x12 pan instead.

♦***The caramel balls have a tendency to sink to the bottom of the cake and bake onto the pan. Removing the cake from the pan is a chore. Skip the caramel if you think its too much trouble.

Fluffy Chocolate Frosting;
♦2/3 cup cocoa
♦1 stick of butter (room temp)
♦1/3 cup milk
♦2 teaspoons vanilla
♦¼ teaspoon salt
♦3 cups sifted powdered sugar. (more if needed)

Combine cocoa and butter and salt, with a hand mixer. Then add vanilla. Slowly add sifted powered sugar.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did! (It only lasted 4 days!)

New Year, New Monday

Giant sleeping bunbun!

Teddy The Porcupine...says Merry Christmas.

♦Remember Oskar the blind kitten? He decided to "help" his mom set up their Christmas tree.

♦I know that it is a bit late for christmas things...but this is so cool! Hot chocolate ornaments.

♦The Bloggess...talks about "The Elf On The Shelf". She makes me laugh so hard, I can't breath.

♦Thanks (again) to the Bloggess...for finding this article: "The Gifts We Give Each Other"

“I have a problem with that [appearance based compliments] because it continues to feed into a culture that says that thin is better. One of my readers returned to work after losing a great deal of weight due to stage four cancer and a coworker said “boy, cancer looks great on you!”

It’s not just weight loss though. We compliment on clothes that are “flattering”, where flattering often has the meaning of “makes you look closer to the cultural stereotype of beauty”. I have a friend who told me that he didn’t like my outfit because it made me look bigger.”

♦A great article that discuss how complimenting people on their appearance can be harmful.

I love Dances With Fat, her blog is terrific!

Many apologies for the extreme lateness of this post! I actually forgot that it was Monday. My days are so mixed around from all of the holiday commotion. Hope you enjoy the late post.

Holiday Traditions

As I was giving the kitties their Christmas present…I was thinking about what traditions other people have.

I thought I would share some of mine, and maybe you could share yours!

♦Ham rolls

I made these for a family Christmas party yeas ago. Now I crave them every winter. Yum!

♦Smoked Salmon

♦I give the kitties a nice sized chunk as a gift.

♦I think this dates back to high school. My best friend Spaceman Steve’s family ate smoked salmon…and somehow it stuck with me.

♦Cookie Madness

I love to bake cookies. One of my favorites is chocolate filled peanut butter cups. This is sort-of like mine, except I fill them with fudge icing.

♦Grandma Honey’s Chocolate Lush

Recipe here.  I couldn't find a photo, sorry!

This recipe is very similar to my grandma’s recipe.

We literally fight over the extra pieces, well except my nephew James…he’s not a fan. ; )

♦“The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T”

I love to watch this movie! I know it is not a Christmas movie…but I watched it with my aunt every Christmas. We watched it while decorating her tree.

So what are your traditions? Care to share, leave a comment.

A Wonderfully Thoughtful Gift

In sharp contrast to the awful birthday card  I received on Monday, one of my best friends gave me a wonderful gift.

To understand it we will have to go back a few years….

***

When my friend Elea was in school, she and her roommates got a dog. Not just a dog…a fantastic wonderful, sweet girl. They named her Nellie. Nell-Bella a Brittany Spaniel grew up to be a spunky one of a kind girl.

She loved to sit in the corner of the yard and “keep an eye on things.” She could be very willful, and stubborn. Her mom had to carry her back from walks on occasion.

Nellie was a sensitive dog. She seemed to know what everyone was saying. You had to speak gently to her.

Nellie was also very friendly and good with dogs, and small animals. She was a good friend to Cici, and nice to my cats.

Last January we were lucky to puppy sit her while her family went to Florida. She spent a whole week with us. Other than her being a very early riser…she was wonderful.

***

After a long drive to their family cabin Nell’s mom let her out of the car. Nell’s heart gave out shortly after. She died in the place she loved, with the people she loved.

***

Today Elea told me she wanted to buy me a necklace, with one condition: it had to have an open back bezel. We went to the hippie store and found a cool turquoise necklace.

When we got back to my house she sprinkled some of Nellie’s ashes into the back of the necklace and sealed them up.

Now I have a beautiful necklace and a part of my furry friend with me. I know that some may find it a bit weird…but I think it is a beautiful gesture.

Thanks Elea!

I miss you Nellie, rest in peace furry buddy.

Thank you to Nell's family for sharing some of the photos!

Worst Birthday Card Ever

I received a birthday card from our health insurance company.

At first it looked like a nice card.

(I had to edit identifying information out.)

Then I opened it up…and found this...

I was not amused.

I don’t like having birthdays. They usually don’t go well.

So this card made me depressed.

I especially dislike the part asking me to get tested for Chlamydia. Seriously?

WTF?

Mon-der The Weather.

My apologies for the brevity of this post. I am really sick. I came down with a nasty head cold over the weekend and am still recovering.

When I am sick I crave two things: chicken soup with dumplings, and citrus spritzer.

I use this dumpling recipe, I just drop smaller bits of dough into chicken soup. About ½ spoonfuls (think grape sized) The dumplings will puff up to about walnut sized. I recommend using a large kettle as they grow quite a bit in size.

This citrus spritzer is really tasty, and has vitamin c. I highly recommend it for colds. It isn’t the best for the flu, the citrus is a bit harsh for an upset stomach.

I would love a kitty like this! Where do I sign up!

Have a great week, and stay healthy!

♦Sea glass candy. This is technically for wedding favors...but would be a cool gift.)

♦Behold the POWER of corgis!(Cute story! Happy ending.)

♦If you everthink that you can't...watch this blind kitten show you....that you can. He can!

Special needs animals are wonderful. They are loving, kind, fun, and sweet, just like regular animals. Give them a chance.

♦This has to be the weirdest blog ever. The Imaginary Image Blog. (Descriptions of imaginary photos.)

♦One last link, a fantastic duet! Bret of Flight of the Concords and Kermit the frog sing "Life’s a Happy Song."

What Am I Thankful For?

*I know I usually like to write lighthearted posts, but I do have to warn you that is quite sad.*

As I was making our Thanksgiving dinner, I was struck with a profound sense of sadness. Thanksgivng hasn’t been a happy day for me in years. It all started back when I was in high school.

In junior year I received a phone call from my biological father. He called to tell me that my grandmother (his mom) was diagnosed with cancer. I was devastated. As a little girl, I had spent so much time with gramma T. that she was my mother/grandma/Marry Poppins/best friend.

For Thanksgiving that year, my bio-dad drove me to see grandma. We all gathered to have dinner with her.

We all tried so hard to be joyful. We told grandma’s favorite dumb jokes, and any funny story we knew. Underneath it all there was a huge sadness.

They had discovered the cancer too late, and the chemo wasn’t working. (They had set up a hospice for her in her home.) Yet we were all in denial. Deep down knew she was going to leave us.

As we began to eat, our sadness deepened. Grandma T. was an amazing cook. (She would have taken Paula Deen down in a competition.) At this point the cancer had spread to grandma’s stomach, she could no longer eat. To swallow food caused her terrible pain. But, she wasn’t going to let cancer steal her dinner!

She would take small bites of everything. Then while we weren’t looking she would have to spit them out into her napkin. She commented on how moist the turkey was, and how fantastic the pecan pie turned out.

At one point I had to walk outside. I broke down. I didn’t want her to hear me crying. It felt so damned unfair! She was the kindest soul I have ever known. She never said anything mean, and had a kind word for everyone. Why her, why now?

She managed to hang on through January. She didn’t want to die during Christmas, and one of her sons’ birthday was early in January. She made it just a few days after.

Even thought it was been 13 years, I still have a difficult time on Thanksgiving. Part of my heart died with her, and it still hurts.

So to answer the Thanksgiving question: What am I thankful for?

Gramma T, I am so glad to have had her in my life, no matter how short the time was.

♦A really neat idea for making mini pumpkin pies. (Use mini-muffin pans.)

♦The "Perfect Sugar Cookie recipe" from The Sweet Adventures of Sugar Belle.

♦Now presenting the infamously bad Kwanza cake from Sandra Lee!

Some Thanksgiving Trivia from National Geographic:

♦The largest pumpkin pie ever made weighed 2,020 pounds (916.25 kilograms).

     ♦A ripe cranberry will bounce.

♦All turkeys and chickens have wishbones.

♦Canadians celebrate their own Thanksgiving every October.

♦Abraham Lincoln declared a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863.

♦The first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held in 1924

♦There is a great movement to combat consumerism. The idea behind Buy Nothing Day is to boycott the madness of Black Friday. Doing so sends a message to retailers that we as consumers won’t fall for their madness.

Magnificent Monday

How can you resist a face like this?! OCD Obsessive Corgi Disorder Blog

After hearing this song I have it stuck in my head.
It took me forever to figure out who it was by.
(I don't keep up with popular music.)

♦Dita Von Teese's advice rule breakers. Very good advice!

♦Swiss Miss's advice for ignoring haters. More cool advice.

♦Continuing with advice...10 Rules for Brilliant Women.

♦A very interesting article about consumerist feminism:

"I’ve always been fascinated and infuriated by the way that one is obliged, as a woman, to purchase the trappings of one’s own gender, and infuriated by the way the rules keep changing the deeper into the game you go. I’ve been getting into more and more professional situations where it is no longer okay to turn up with huge biker boots and a slash of clashing lipstick and expect to be taken seriously. As women, everything we wear is a statement, and we have no right to remain sartorially silent. We negotiate a field of signifiers every time we open our wardrobes, or, in my case, every time we rummage through the clothes-pile on the bedroom floor."

♦This piece on street fashion cracked me up!

"Where do people buy these absurd, absurd clothes? I know that a lot of it is more like moving art installations than actual clothes, but you take a picture of a chick wearing a floor-length ball gown made entirely out of Nerds Ropes and you don’t offer any explanation — like, sure, we’re all just supposed to nod along with great dignity and appreciation for art as we ignore the fact that she’s walking around an actual city in modern civilization wearing a bra shaped like a dolphin. Right, okay."

♦Delicious pumpkin cinnamon pancakes. Yummy! Check out the recipe.

♦Speaking of absurdity:
♦Worried about the zombie apocalypse? Here are some ideas:

Armor, The Zombie Survival Guide, Zombie Survival Wiki, Zombie survival supplies.

My favorite product is the Zombie bait station. Ha ha ha!

I am adding a new feature!

I have an almanac that lists the color of the day. It is determined by astrological data…I don‘t follow horoscopes too closely but, I do use it to try to add some color to my wardrobe. (I try to wear the color of the day. ) A few folks have expressed interest in the color of the day, so I thought I would share with all of you. Enjoy!

"Bask in my magnificence!"

"Are you done with the flash-thingy yet?"

"Seriously, I am done."

Hope you like our silly cute pups and much as we do!

Straight Hair For The Price of Chemical Burns...Awesome!

I have been hearing terrible things about the Brazilian Blowout. (It is a chemical treatment to straighten hair.) There have been reports of burns and hair loss.

It is really scary what  chemicals can be in beauty products. I want women and men, to be more aware of what they put on and in their bodies.

Siobhan O Connor tells of her experience with the Brazilian Blowout:

"Siobhan O’Connor’s journey into natural beauty began with formaldehyde. Whenever she and her best friend from back home in Montreal, Alexandra Spunt, would travel cross-country to see one other, they’d do “girly things”—including a foray into Brazilian blowouts. Their hair looked great for a month, but when O’Connor’s strands started breaking and Spunt’s hair turned into a “French-fried mangled mess,” they did some investigating and learned that they’d gotten a formaldehyde treatment. (Brazilian blowouts are now officially on the OSHA hazard alert list.) "
